ABOUT DR. GREG POTTER

Greg Potter, Ph.D.

If you are looking for somebody to avoid the trivia, leave the entertainment to the entertainers, and just give you a whole lot of content from hello to goodbye, Greg Potter is that person.

Following graduation from college in 1969, Greg headed for the United States Navy. During his military service, he landed two All-Navy Boxing Championships, as a welterweight and a light middle weight. Following his tour of duty, he decided to stay in Southern California and spent two and a half years boxing professionally. His career as a professional boxer took him to the top of the lightweight class.

He lost ten round decisions to Ruben Navarro (then number four in the world), and former Lightweight Champion Carlos Ortiz, before fighting Roberto Duran in what was Duran’s first fight after winning the lightweight championship from Ken Buchanan. Greg says he has the distinction of being beat up by the best. After being stopped by Duran, Greg decided to leave boxing while he still had part of his faculties left. That, he says, "Could have been the best decision I ever made!!!"

Greg then joined the Jim Baker agency of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance company and was there from 1974 to 1976. Greg was a member of the prestigious Million Dollar Round Table and was promoted to manager of the Joplin, Missouri Office. It was a hard decision for Greg to leave the insurance industry, but he had an offer to become the Executive Director of the Joplin Boys’ Club in 1976. Greg’s first love was working with children. He took a pay cut, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Under Greg’s leadership, the Boys’ Club increased membership over four times, increased programing, and multiplied the annual revenue by five times.

It was through his diverse background of military service, professional boxing, Insurance sales, and Youth Services work, that Greg’s interest in Psychology was stimulated. Greg made the decision to leave the Boy’s Club and return to school, where he achieved a Masters Degree in Psychology with emphasis in Community Mental Health. He continued on, then to secure his Doctorate in Counseling.

Greg has now maintained a private counseling practice since 1981 in Manhattan, Kansas. Greg has been helping people over the last twenty years to achieve goals. His specialty is working with the individual, tapping strengths and igniting internal energy in the direction of goal achievement.

Greg has shown the unemployed how to capitalize on that advantage. He has shown the most hard core smokers how to become nonsmokers, helped yo-yo dieters win the weight loss battle and worked with hundreds of others to achieve a variety of personal, professional and relationship goals.
